People often mistakenly think it is only the sugar content in the soft drinks that we need to be concerned about.  However, diet soft drinks contain phosphoric acid and/or citric acid which contributes to the erosion of tooth enamel.

While the high sugar content in regular soft drinks will contribute to cavities the acidic level in soft drinks can increase the PH level in our mouths.  If the PH level in our mouth drop low enough the acid begins to dissolve the hard enamel layer of our teeth.

In testing done by Academy of General Dentistry they found that lighter colour soft drinks (lemonade etc) are even more damaging to our teeth than dark coloured soft drinks (cola etc).

For your health in general it is advisable to cut out soft drinks or at very least moderate your intake.  If you must drink them, try drinking them with a straw, this will reduce the contact with your teeth.  Also rinse you mouth out with water after consuming soft drinks as this will also help to protect your teeth.

The best alternative is to drink water, better for your teeth, better for your health.

As one of the Directors of DCA Dental and Nova Dental he practices at every one of our 7 surgeries.  His focus and passion in dentistry is Disorders of the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) and Dental Implants.

Dr Koz has been doing dental implant surgery for over 20 years and has done thousands of cases during this period.  He has travelled to Portugal, America and all over Australia to keep updated on all the latest advances and technologies in this area of dentistry.  He has also acted as a mentor to many Dentists around the country who are training in Implant Dentistry.
